Ski Jump Liaison - Keith Fanta:
Norge held their first annual King of the Hill competition last Saturday night, and it was an excellent event. No hill records were set, however there was a lot of strategy that came into play, and the five top competitors split over $2,000 in prize money, a significant amount for athletes in their teens and twenties.
There were initially about twenty jumpers, and the competition lasted four rounds where the five lowest scoring participants of each round were dropped from competition. The jumper with the longest jump in the first round was allowed to skip subsequent rounds and sit in the Kings Throne as long as their jump distance wasnt exceeded. This continued through each subsequent round.
The leader after the third round took his skis to the top of the jump, but since none of the other four competitors beat his distance he was able to just ski down the landing hill in the fourth round rather than have to jump. Kyle Kessler was proclaimed the King of the Hill, and is the Norge jumper who was named to the US Development Team last year.
Since this was not a sanctioned event, the jumpers were able to start from which ever level they wanted to on the tower, and there were a greater number of falls than is usual at a jumping tournament. The only injuries occurring, fortunately, were the jumpers pride.
Norge did make a point of announcing they had changed portapotty vendors, and each new facility featured flushing toilets, lights, flowers and a mirror.
Norges Fall Tournament will be Sunday, September 18, at Noon, and well have more information available as the date draws closer.

National Ski Council Federation  Keith Fanta:
Today I received an e-mail from the NSCF Vice-President with a draft of a business analysis he has been working on. It appears that it is starting to address some of the areas where the organization has been failing for close to two years. The areas being addressed are Public Affairs, Public Relations, Education, Website and Member Benefits. While I have little faith in the President of the Federation, I do have faith in Mike German, the VP, and I believe this draft will be a step towards the Federation making some improvements.
The Annual Meeting will be held in Crested Butte the fourth weekend in August. While I havent been happy with the actual meeting portion I do feel the opportunity to meet and network with the officers of other councils is invaluable. It is my intent to again have the President and Executive V-ice-President attend, and we will try to find the most cost efficient itinerary.

Fort Wayne Ski Club still has openings for the trip to Athens Greece in the fall, when the weather is Perfect! They will first stop in Paris, France where a tour bus will be picking them up and go to Paris to see all the sights. Then it’s off to Athens for a day to see the sights and an Authentic Greek dinner with a Greek dance show. Next, it’s off to the cruise ship to see the islands such as Santorini, Herkalon, Rhodes, Turkey and Ephessos. Then back to Athens for a couple more days for more sightseeing or just lie around the beach and relax (naked if you want!) This is a non-skiing trip (unless you water ski). The price so far is $2000.00. This includes your airfare, hotel, bus tours, breakfast & dinner in Athens, the cruise with all meals included on the cruise. The main flight is scheduled out of Fort Wayne, but arrangements can be made for those of you who can leave out of Chicago or Detroit. They want to take at least 20 people and have 15 of which 11 are wild and crazy single women!! They need Men! They are willing to take up to 40 people, so there are plenty of openings! Please contact Kd McDaniel at (260) 486-7825 or (260) 760-5583. They’ll be closing this trip out June 30, so you have until then to make up your mind. We had 26 people out of the 42 people on the trip attended. A lot of great pictures in photo albums and on computer laptops were shown. We also gave a preview of next year’s trip to Val Gardena. A number of people signed up (with a deposit). It looks like this is going to be a very popular trip.

Winter Carnival – Nettie Napravnik (Trip Chair): March 12-14, 2006 - Schuss/ Shanty Creek – Don’t forget to sign up for lodging lottery at Seminar. No money down is required, but you can vote for a theme.

Chicago Week 2005 – Lynn Newton (Chair), Debbie Clegg (Asst.): March 19 –26, 2005 – Banff, Alberta, Canada –
This Chicago Week was like others in the past except that each event was at a different place. We started out the week at Lake Louise Ski Resort with a Welcome Breakfast there and then after a day of skiing we had an après ski Welcome Party in a different room at Lake Louise Ski Resort. The Welcome Party included a fun band who played for us. I heard that the food at both events that day were really good. Monday was another ski day at Lake Louise and we had the first race there. Tuesday we went to Sunshine Mountain and had an après ski at the ski resort. That après ski was helped by Viking Ski Shop as a sponsor. Wednesday was a free day and the night included most ski club parties. During the day many went to Kicking Horse to ski, some went ice walking in Johnson's Canyon, a few went dog sledding and a few skied at one of the 3 local ski areas. Thursday we went to Norquay, the closest ski area to Banff. We had our 2nd race there and a good lunch after the race. I think most everyone was there and enjoyed it. Thursday night we had the pubcrawl including 5 of the bars in Banff. There were questions to be answered in each bar and the winning team included Keith and Debbie Fanta, Mike Pogar and Randy Baustert. Friday was back to Sunshine but it tended to be a short day for most because it was the only day with big crowds. That Friday was Good Friday and we found out it's basically a national holiday in Canada so the crowds came to enjoy the best snow at Sunshine. Friday night was the final night dinner at the Banff Springs Hotel. We had a beautiful room, gave out lots of raffle prizes (another big thank you to Viking Ski Shop), gave out the race awards and danced to music from a D.J. after enjoying a Mexican Dinner.
I want to thank all of the people who helped out during the week. First a big thank you to Debbie Clegg who was the assistant trip leader for this trip and Lester Hampton for running the races. Helping to punch credential cards at each event included Keith and Debbie Fanta, Randy Baustert, Gary Kaufman, Mike Pogar and Lynn Manley. A big thank you to all of them for their help and anyone else I missed mentioning.

Chicago Week 2006 – March 25 – April 1, 2006 – Aspen, Colorado: The tour operator is getting all of the air he can possibly get. We will ask for an additional $45 for those who paid $5 last year. $40 of that is for air, $10 for lodging. Lynn Newton will be proposed for trip leader and Mary Kreinbring will be proposed for her assistant.

Trip Selection Chicago Week 2007 – Teri Kinney: The trip will be to Sun Valley March 24 – 31, 2007. We are trying to get details worked out. Some lodging prices are coming down. A $5 deposit will be requested at Seminar. You will get $10 off the price of the trip for the early deposit.

Trip Selection Europe 2006 – Mike Pogar: The trip is to Selva di ValGardena, January 13 – 21, 2006. The cost is $1469.00. Contact Mike Pogar (proposed trip leader) at 847-381-4452 or mpogar@sbcglobal.net or Bill Gleason (proposed assistant) at 630-969-6185. High Alpine Adventures is the tour operator.
